It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Claude Berthiaume Shihan, a towering figure in the world of Aikido, who left us on March 23, 2026, at 1:32 PM at Hôpital de Saint-Eustache. Surrounded by his cherished loved ones, Berthiaume Sensei’s departure marks the end of an era for Aikido de la Montagne, where he served as Chief Instructor since its inception in 1989.

Claude Berthiaume Shihan, an 8th Dan master instructor certified through Hombu Dojo, was more than just a teacher; he was a visionary who cultivated a thriving dojo and a dedicated community. His leadership at Aikido de la Montagne was a beacon, guiding countless students with his deep understanding and unwavering commitment to the art. He fostered an environment of respect, discipline, and continuous learning, supported by a formidable team of senior instructors, including Robert Saad Shihan, 7th Dan, and other high-ranking practitioners.

Beyond his role at Aikido de la Montagne, Berthiaume Sensei was a respected voice within the United States Aikido Federation (USAF). As a dedicated Board Member and a vital member of its Technical Committee, he contributed his immense knowledge and experience to shaping the future of Aikido practice and instruction. This committee, an assembly of Shihan who have devoted their lives to the art, benefited immeasurably from his insights.
